Unlinked brand mentions (UBLs) are an often overlooked opportunity. Any time someone mentions your brand without including a link it is a backlink opportunity in disguise. Follow the steps outlined below to find them.

Google Search Operators

Search "your brand name" -site:yourdomain.com This search tactic will return all web pages that mention your brand name. Excluding your domain name using -site:yourdomain.com will exclude all mentions of your brand name that are actually on your website.

Brand Monitoring Tools

Set up Google Alerts, Mention.com, or Brand24 for your brand name, product names and key personnel names. These websites act as a pipeline that delivers new mentions as they are published.

Backlink Gap Analysis

Google has long said that brand mentions are part of the signal set for entity understanding, and part of the site authority signals, although that term has not been discussed much in recent years.
